Junior Achievement Seeking Board Members

for the Coming Year

Angleton, TX – May 18, 2011 –Launched in 1956, Junior Achievement of Brazoria County, the local division of JA Worldwide, is seeking community volunteers to serve as Board members for the organization.  Meetings are once a month usually 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM the third Wednesday of the month in the Brazosport Area.  Junior Achievement offers free programming geared to help kids make the right choices, keeping them in school, and educating them in basic financial literacy in order to help them become self-sufficient adults.  Some tag the Texas high school dropout rate as high as 33 percent with speculation that the rate may be higher than 50 percent for Hispanic students and about 46 percent for African American students.  But no matter how the figures are twisted, the 2010 raw numbers show that each year more than 130,000 Texas students who entered high school as ninth-graders do not graduate with their class four years later,

You can help fight against dependency on welfare by becoming a Board member of JA.  For more information about becoming a Board member or other volunteer opportunities, please contact Junior Achievement at 979-549-0800 or just fill out the application on www.ja-brazoriacounty.org

Local Company and Community Leader Celebrities Gross almost $25,000 for Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement (JA) of Brazoria County’s 22nd Annual Celebrity Waiter Event was a fun event attended by Business & industry leaders across the County.

The Cherotel location afforded participants plenty of room for dinner, a silent and live auction.  Waiters & Decorators got into the spirit with a wide variety of table themes.  Some of those themes included:  a chemical concocting chef for BASF.  A Hollywood theme for A-Kim’s Bail Bonds and Ann’s Custom Monogramming. Area Print Shop/A Day to Remember’s tables consisted of an elaborate Safari theme. Chevron Phillips participants were decked out in a western theme.  Freeport Host Lions Club had an elaborate jungle them with plenty of wild animals.  The Battle of the Bernard theme consisted of intricately knotted ropes and seagulls. Wells Fargo Advisors were decked out Olympic style with a working center torch. BISD administrators featured a beach theme; TDEC, Inc. had a high school clichés theme. TDECU tables sported an elaborate NASCAR theme. Nalco & Excel had an over the top Arabian Knights theme complete with genies and a harem tent.  Nalco/Excel took home the coveted porcelain pig that is awarded to the Best Decorated Table.

Thanks to all of our Celebrity Waiters who tirelessly trudged around all evening seeing that guests were happy.  They included:  Anne Allstott, Jimmie Birmingham, Tim Daeschner, Derrick Dees, Mary Kay Gutknecht, Brent Hudson, Gary Kersh, Judge Sherry Kersh, Wayne McDowell, Chief Tyrone Morrow, Marinell Music, Art Orscheln, Commissioner Dude Payne, Chris Perkins, Jeff Pynes, Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh, Matt Rickaway, Joe Keith Ripple, Richard Spencer, Roger Thomas, Judge Justin Thomson, and Judge Jeremy Warren.

Thanks to all the participants and purchasers who made this event successful.  Proceeds from the event will directly benefit several thousand students annually by providing the funds necessary to purchase program materials and train volunteers to teach basic economics and financial literacy programs in seven school districts in the county. Close to five hundred volunteers from the community and local businesses present hands-on, colorful programs to over 6,000 students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, addressing issues like unemployment, fiscal and monetary policies, financial stability, career options and employment readiness.

We at Junior Achievement understand that not every student will become an entrepreneur or business executive, but everyone needs to have a basic understanding of budgeting, living within their means and making sound consumer choices.

October 20, 2009

Once again it is time to BOWL for EDUCATION at the Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thon.  JA’s Gobbler Bowl is scheduled for November 12th at Texas Bowl from 2-5 PM and 5-8 PM.  November 14th at Angleton Bowl from 11-2 & 2-5 PM  and November 20th at Texas Bowl from 5-8 PM.  Five member teams bowl for pledges and prizes to generate funds for the Junior Achievement of Brazoria County economics program in local schools throughout the county.  The goal is to have each bowler raise at least $50.00 in pledges.  Individuals receive prizes depending on amount collected, plus all bowlers collecting $50 or more go in a drawing for several prizes.  At this time we are seeking event and Lane sponsors as well as teams for Gobble Bowl. The cost to bowl is $25.00 per adult (Fee waived for everyone raising $50 or more in pledges.)  For more information and bowling times contact the JA office at (979) 549-0800 or sign-up online at www.ja-brazoriacounty.org.

Junior Achievement tries to provide the one element that seems to be lacking from school work:  the relationship between the world of education and the “real” world where all this knowledge would be put to practice. These two worlds seem disconnected to many students.

One opportunity to bridge the communication gap between the classroom and the board room will come to almost 7,000 Brazoria County students this school year under a program entitled Junior Achievement.

A worldwide program conceived in 1919, this volunteer effort was brought to Brazoria County in 1956 in an effort to bring business and community leaders into the schools to share their knowledge about real life skills, the world of work and economics and community participation.

There is a Brazoria County Board for Junior Achievement Chaired by Tim Daeschner of BASF and Chair-elect Jack Brown retired County Judge, with staff President Kim Effenberger and Program Manager Stephanie Ward. Under their direction and with the participation of the board members, over 500 volunteers will enter into Brazoria County classrooms from kindergarten to grade 12 during the school year.

The volunteers come from local businesses, from positions of leadership and from diverse jobs and professions in our community.

Prospective volunteers are encouraged to contact JA about teaching a class. The time commitment is minimal and the rewards of interacting with students is an inspiration to all participants.

The programs that are spread throughout the semester consist of a one-hour visit per week over a five week period.” The course materials are highly interactive with the students and intended to be fun and enjoyable, while demonstrating how the world of business and commerce functions, basic money management and career investigation. The students are excited to ask questions of the volunteers, such as what job they have, how they got their job and how what they know might relate to the students’ educational opportunities.

As well as being inspirational, the program also fills a portion of the “Texas State Content Standards” required by the law. Intended to be a “life skills program,” it fills a void that is often lacking in the conventional curriculum.

To learn about money management, debt, interest rates, the stock market and how free enterprise functions often opens new windows of opportunity for the students both in and outside of school.

With the goal of visiting 7,000 students annually, JA is always on the lookout for corporations, parents or individuals that are willing to invest a small amount of their time in our citizens of tomorrow.

With 500 volunteers visiting 7 school districts from Freeport to Pearland, the program has grown to become a valuable and welcome addition to the growth and education of our children.

As students grow and mature, they are exposed to a material as well as spiritual world. Any efforts to provide them with the skill set to balance a checkbook or start a business will in the words of Junior Achievement “inspire their success and encourage their dreams.”

If you would like to know more about Junior Achievement or would be interested in becoming a volunteer, you can go online at www.ja-brazoriacounty.org or you can call Stephanie Ward directly at 979-549-0800.

Come out and bowl with Chevron Phillips, Killum Pest Control, Nalco, Old Ocean Federal Credit Union, TDECU, UPS and Wells Fargo or give a few hours to change a child’s life forever.
